This monument was built to honour the the Czechoslovak Legionnaires who fought on the side of the victorious allies and played a part in winning independence for Czchoslovakia. The monument is pretty impressive for its size. It features a central obelisk and a sculptural ensemble of soldiers around its base. The sculptures of the soldiers are very realistic portrayals of in varying poses relating to combat actions, one is readying to throw a grenade, another is readying to fire, one is blowing into a horn to signal the soldiers forward. There’s also a sculpture of a peasant woman carrying a flag, urging the soldiers forward. The monument is not that close to the main tourist circuit of the city, but there are so many monuments in this area, it’s worthwhile to combine them into one visit. A worthy memorial to Czech heroes.
